The kit needs to look approachable to pupils, residents or tenants, while still having the pockets and toughness of a tradesperson's gear. It also has to cope with being worn from the first unlock of the morning to the last check of the evening.
Odd jobs need tradesperson pockets
Caretakers carry a ring of keys, a radio or phone, a screwdriver, a tape and often a torch. Holster or cargo trousers keep tools to hand without a belt full of pouches.
Kneepad pockets save the knees when fixing low radiators, skirting and under-sink pipes; pair them with knee pads that fit the trouser properly. A coverall kept in the store cupboard protects the uniform for the really dirty jobs, like clearing a blocked drain or getting into a dusty loft.
Gritting, bins and the car park
Outdoor tasks happen at the edges of the day, often in the dark: unlocking gates at seven, gritting before the first cars arrive, putting bins out after hours. A hi-vis vest or jacket makes sense whenever vehicles are moving, and a waterproof keeps you dry in winter.
Check your employer's risk assessment for what is needed on site. Sturdy boots with good grip matter on icy paths.
Being recognised on site
In schools, care settings and blocks of flats, people need to know at a glance that the person in the corridor with a ladder works there. A consistent branded polo or sweatshirt in the organisation's colours does that, and supports safeguarding in places with children or vulnerable adults.
A name or role embroidered on the chest helps pupils and residents get to know their caretaker, and makes it easier for visitors to ask for help.
Where to put your logo
Embroider the organisation's logo or school badge on the left chest of polos and sweatshirts, with the caretaker's name or role, such as 'Site Manager', on the right. A small logo on fleeces and jackets keeps the outer layer consistent. If hi-vis vests are used, a simple print of the site or school name on the back fluorescent panel works well; keep it clear of the reflective tape.
Ordering for caretakers and site maintenance
Most caretakers and site maintenance start with workwear polo shirts, holster and kneepad trousers and branded sweatshirts. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
