Contract teams are visible to the public all day. A recognisable uniform tells residents, caretakers and site managers who you are and that you are meant to be there. Tender documents and client audits often ask how your staff are identified, too.
Strimmers, mowers and flying debris
Strimming throws stones, glass and dog mess. Eye protection or a visor, hearing protection and sturdy boots are the basics. Long trousers are wise, and some operators prefer strimmer trousers with extra protection on the lower leg. Your risk assessment should set what each task needs.
Ride-on mowers and compact tractors bring vibration and slopes. Supportive boots with good grip on wet grass help keep operators safe getting on and off.
Verges, car parks and the public
Working beside roads, in car parks or on industrial estates means vehicles nearby. Hi-vis is often required by the client, and roadside verge work follows Chapter 8 traffic management with the hi-vis class set by the plan. Hi-vis polos and tees suit summer, with hi-vis jackets and fleeces for colder months.
In schools, hospitals and housing schemes, a clear logo helps staff be recognised as authorised contractors.
Winter gritting and leaf season
Grounds teams often switch to gritting, snow clearing and leaf collection in winter. Early starts in the dark mean hi-vis waterproof jackets, thermal layers, gloves and beanies. Leaf blowing and collection is dusty, noisy work, so eye and hearing protection stay in the kit.
Plan two sets of outerwear per person so jackets can dry overnight. A van heater is not a drying room, and a crew pulling on damp jackets at 5am will not stay out long in sleet.
Where to put your logo
Most grounds teams wear hi-vis much of the year, so print the logo on the fluorescent background, never over reflective tape. A large back logo is popular but can reduce the compliant area, so keep it within the limits of the garment class you need. A chest logo plus 'Grounds Maintenance' or your client's name on the back works well for contract teams. Embroidery suits non-hi-vis polos, gilets and fleeces worn on lower-risk sites. A proof lets you check the back text against your client's rules.
Ordering for grounds maintenance teams
Most grounds maintenance teams start with hi-vis T-shirts and polos, hi-vis jackets and hi-vis trousers. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
