With no single trade to dress for, the trick is a small set of versatile kit that covers most jobs, plus a few extras kept in the van. It also covers working in tenanted homes and empty properties.
One outfit, ten different jobs
Build the core around clothing that will not hold you back on any task. Holster or cargo trousers with knee pockets handle kneeling at skirting level and carrying screws up a ladder. A polycotton polo is smart enough for an elderly customer's living room and tough enough for painting a fence. A softshell covers outdoor jobs in most weather.
Then keep the extras for the dirty jobs: disposable coveralls for loft work and void clear-outs, gloves for waste removal and safety glasses for drilling overhead.
- Core: holster trousers, polo, softshell, safety trainers
- Van kit: disposable coveralls, gloves, safety glasses
- Winter: fleece or zip hoodie for layering
Working in tenanted and vulnerable homes
Maintenance staff for letting agents, housing providers and care settings go into homes where the tenant may not have been told who is coming. Clear branding, a name badge and consistent colours help a tenant or carer confirm you are expected before they let you in.
For housing contracts, ask the client whether they want their name on the uniform, yours, or both. Some prefer a co-branded look so tenants recognise the landlord.
Voids, lofts and clear-outs
Empty properties can hide sharps, mould, pest droppings and damaged electrics. Gloves rated to EN 388, sturdy safety footwear and disposable coveralls are sensible for clearing voids. In lofts, old insulation is itchy and dusty, so wear long sleeves and coveralls. If you find anything that might be asbestos, stop work and get it checked. Carry a bin bag for contaminated disposables so they do not end up on the van seat.
Where to put your logo
Embroider a clear logo on the left chest of polos, softshells and hoodies, and add your phone number or web address across the back. For a handyman business, the back print works like a mobile advert in every street you visit. Maintenance teams working on contract can have the client's logo on one chest and their own on a sleeve. We send a proof so both parties can approve the layout.
Ordering for handymen and property maintenance
Most handymen and property maintenance start with holster pocket trousers, workwear polo shirts and softshell jackets. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
