Workwear for window cleaners

A window cleaner gets wet on purpose. Water-fed poles drip down your arms and onto your shoulders, ladders put you face-first into the wind, and the round carries on whether it is sunny or drizzling. Your kit needs to dry fast and keep the worst of it out.

You are also standing on someone's drive or in front of their shop window for everyone to see. Every house on the round is a chance for a neighbour to read your name and number off your back.

Pole water and rain

Pure water running down a pole always finds its way to your sleeves and the top of your trousers. A waterproof jacket with good cuffs, or a light rain shell over a wicking layer, keeps you dry without cooking you on a summer round. Look for an EN 343 rated jacket if you want a tested level of rain protection.

Waterproof over trousers or a pair that dries fast saves a soggy afternoon. Wellingtons or waterproof boots are common, though plenty of cleaners prefer a lighter boot with good grip on wet paving.

Ladder work and grip

Where ladders are still used, footwear with a defined heel and a sole that grips wet rungs matters more than anything else in the kit. A slippery sole on a wet rung is how most window cleaning falls start.

Loose cuffs, long hems and dangling drawcords can snag on gutters, ladder hooks and window catches. Keep jackets trim, tuck cords away and choose tops that do not ride up when you reach above your head.

Summer rounds

On hot days the round is hard physical work, pushing a trolley and working a pole for hours. Performance T-shirts that wick sweat, a cap to shade your eyes when looking up at glass, and work shorts for dry spells keep you comfortable.

A bucket hat protects the back of the neck on long commercial jobs where you face one elevation for an hour or more. Sun cream is cheaper than a burnt neck, but a hat is easier to remember.

Where to put your logo

Window cleaners get the most from a large print across the back with your name, phone number and website, because customers and neighbours see you from behind while you work. Pair it with a small embroidered chest logo on softshells and caps for a tidier front view when you knock for payment. Printed tees are easy to reorder each season as they fade from sun and constant wetting.

Ordering for window cleaners

Most window cleaners start with waterproof jackets and rainwear, performance T-shirts and softshell jackets. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.

Questions

Questions from window cleaners

What should a window cleaner wear in winter?

Layers work best. A wicking base or thermal, a fleece or hoodie, and a waterproof shell on top. Gloves that keep some feel for handling squeegees and poles help. Strip a layer off as you warm up rather than sweating inside a heavy coat.

Is it worth printing our phone number on the back?

For most window cleaners, yes. You spend hours facing away from the street, and a clear name and number on the back is seen by neighbours on every round. Keep it large, simple and high contrast so it reads from the pavement.

Embroidery or print for window cleaning tops?

Print suits big back designs on tees and hoodies. Embroidery suits a small chest logo on softshells, fleeces and caps, and copes well with constant wetting. Many cleaners use both: print for the advert, stitching for the smart front.
