Childminders working from home have the same needs on a smaller scale. A branded polo or sweatshirt makes a home setting look like the registered business it is, on the school run and at the park.
Kit that copes with messy play
Messy play is the daily test. Polycotton polos and sweatshirts take frequent hot washes better than pure cotton and dry quickly, so staff can rotate three or four tops through the week. Darker colours such as navy, bottle green and burgundy hide the paint marks that never quite come out.
Avoid anything with hard toggles, long drawcords or chunky zips at the front. Staff lift and cuddle small children all day, so a smooth chest, soft embroidery and short sleeves or easy push-up cuffs make more sense than fashion details.
Outside in all weathers
Most settings get children outside every day, including forest school sessions and walks to the shops. Staff need a fleece or softshell they can kneel down in, and a proper waterproof for wet mornings in the garden.
For walks, a printed hi-vis vest for each adult makes the group easy to see, and junior hi-vis vests for the children are worth adding. Many settings keep a box of each by the door.

- Adult and junior hi-vis vests for outings
Who is who in the room
Parents and inspectors like to see which adults are staff. One colour for practitioners and a different colour for room leaders or the manager is a simple system that needs no explanation. Some settings add first names under the logo so toddlers and new parents learn them quickly.
If you take students on placement, a plain top with a small logo in a third colour keeps them identifiable without implying they are qualified staff.
Where to put your logo
Embroider the nursery logo on the left chest of polos, sweatshirts and fleeces. It is soft enough against a child's face once backed properly, and it lasts through hot washes far longer than a transfer. Keep it modest in size. First names can go under the logo or on the right chest. For hi-vis vests, print the setting name on the back on the fluorescent panel only, never over the reflective tape, so the vest stays compliant and parents can read it from across the park.
