Your crews are also the face of the company on customers' driveways. A clean, branded jacket on the person dropping a skip outside someone's house does a lot of quiet selling to the neighbours watching from the window.
Roadside drops and transfer station tipping
Most skip drops happen on public roads and driveways, often with the lorry partly in the carriageway. Hi-vis is the normal expectation, and transfer stations and landfill sites usually set their own rules at the gate. Check your risk assessment, and the rules of each tip you use, before buying one class for everyone.
Yard staff sorting loads and loading grabs are around shovels, telehandlers and reversing lorries all day, so they need the same visibility as the drivers.
Chains, hooks and sharp waste
Skip chains are heavy, greasy and freezing in winter. Hands take the punishment, so handling gloves with a good grip, and cut-resistant gloves for anyone picking through mixed waste, are worth issuing as standard. The EN 388 marking tells you a glove's cut, abrasion and puncture performance.
Waste is full of nails, broken glass and plasterboard screws. A midsole that resists penetration matters as much as the toe cap. Look for S3 or S1P under EN ISO 20345 rather than a basic S1.
Getting in and out of the cab all day
Long padded coats ride up and catch on cab steps. Many drivers prefer a hi-vis fleece or softshell they can keep on while driving, with a waterproof shell left behind the seat for wet drops.
Trousers need a bit of stretch for climbing onto the chassis to sheet a load, and a hard-wearing seat for the hours behind the wheel. Pockets that close keep phones and delivery notes from dropping out on the tip floor.
Where to put your logo
Print your logo large on the back of hi-vis jackets and vests so it reads from across a road or a busy tip, keeping it on the fluorescent fabric and never over the reflective tape. A big back print can eat into the compliant area, so we size it to suit the garment. Embroider a small chest logo on fleeces and beanies. Adding your phone number on the back works well, as neighbours often ring the number they see on a skip driver.
Ordering for skip hire companies
Most skip hire companies start with hi-vis jackets and rainwear, hi-vis hoodies and fleeces and hi-vis trousers. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
