Drivers also deliver into other people's sites, each with its own PPE rules. Turning up without the right gear can mean being refused entry and missing a slot. Getting the kit right is part of running on time.
Arriving on someone else's site
Distribution centres, construction sites, ports and farms all set their own rules. Most expect hi-vis and safety footwear as a minimum. Building sites and some yards also want a helmet, glasses and gloves. Keep a full set in the cab so drivers are never turned away.
Hi-vis to EN ISO 20471 is standard. Many sites ask for Class 2 or above; check each customer's site rules or your own risk assessment.
Coupling, strapping and sheeting
The fifth wheel and suzie coils are greasy. Gloves to EN 388 protect hands when handling straps, chains and curtain buckles, and keep the steering wheel clean afterwards. Trousers with knee reinforcement help when kneeling to check landing legs or lights.
Boots need a good grip for the catwalk and trailer bed, especially when wet. EN ISO 20345 S3 or S7 suits drivers out in all weathers.
Comfort in the cab
Sitting for hours, drivers want soft, non-restrictive clothing. A polo or sweatshirt with a softshell they can slip on at each stop works better than driving in a bulky hi-vis coat. Thermal layers are worth it for drivers on nights or sleeping in the cab in winter. Pick dark colours that hide diesel and grease from the fifth wheel, and keep a clean top in the cab for customer meetings.
Where to put your logo
Embroider the haulier's logo on the left chest of polos, sweatshirts and softshells for a smart, durable finish. On hi-vis, print the logo on the fluorescent background, never on the reflective tape, and keep it to a sensible size so the garment stays compliant. A back print with the company name helps at busy loading bays. Matching the cab livery makes a fleet look organised to customers.
Ordering for hGV and lorry drivers
Most hGV and lorry drivers start with hi-vis jackets and rainwear, safety boots and safety gloves. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
