Butchers also have one of the most recognisable uniforms in retail, and customers expect to see it. Here is how to cover both. Start with the knives, then the cold.
Knives and cut protection
Boning and cutting injuries are a real risk, especially to the non-knife hand and the abdomen. Cut-resistant gloves rated to EN 388 for general cutting, and chain mail gloves and aprons for boning, are standard in many shops and processing rooms. Choose gloves that fit closely; a baggy glove is more dangerous than it looks.
Keep knives sharp and use a proper scabbard. Follow your risk assessment for which tasks need mesh protection.
Cold rooms and wet floors
Walk-in chillers and cutting rooms are kept cold for food safety, so butchers need warmth without bulk at the block. Thermal base layers under a jacket or tunic work better than heavy jumpers, which can harbour bacteria. Floors are often wet and greasy from washing down, so slip-resistant safety boots or food-safe wellingtons with toe protection make sense.
Wash all workwear frequently at high temperatures; blood and fat set into fabric quickly.
The classic butcher's look
Customers recognise the striped apron, the white coat and the straw boater or cap. Many butchers keep the stripes in their brand colour for the shop counter, with plainer kit for the cutting room. It signals tradition and quality, which matters when you are competing on craft rather than price. A white coat or jacket under the apron keeps the look crisp.
Where to put your logo
Embroider the shop name on the apron bib, where customers see it across the counter, and on the chest of jackets and polos. For striped aprons, choose a thread colour that stands out against both stripes, often white or a contrasting brand colour. Caps take a small embroidered logo on the front. Because butchers' kit is washed very hot and often, embroidery is far more durable than print.
Ordering for butchers
Most butchers start with branded aprons, safety gloves and thermal base layers. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
