Uniform choices have to fit the lab's containment level, procedures and what is being handled. Your safety officer and local rules should set the requirement for each area. Nothing here is one size fits all.
Lab coats and protective layers
A lab coat or protective tunic is the core garment in most labs, worn over personal or uniform clothing and removed when leaving the lab. The design, fabric and fastenings should match your risk assessment; some labs need side or rear-fastening gowns, others flame resistant coats when working with flammable solvents.
Disposable coveralls are used in clean rooms and for higher-risk work where garments must be discarded after use.
Eyes, hands and feet
Safety glasses or goggles protect against splashes and are standard on many lab benches. Gloves should be chosen for the specific chemicals or biological agents in use; nitrile suits many tasks but not all. Closed-toe shoes are usually required, and some labs ask for chemical-resistant or antistatic footwear. Check your local rules and COSHH assessments. Change gloves often and never touch door handles or keyboards in contaminated gloves.
Under the coat and outside the lab
Scrubs or tunics under a lab coat are practical, easy to launder and keep personal clothes out of the lab. Outside the lab, embroidered polos, softshells or fleeces suit sample collection, field work, reception and sales, and give visitors a clear view of the brand.
Keep lab garments and office garments clearly different, so nobody wears a contaminated coat into the canteen.
Where to put your logo
Embroider the lab or company logo on the left chest of tunics, scrubs and polos. Embroidery is durable and copes with the hot or frequent washing lab garments need. Keep branding off disposables. A name or role embroidered on the right chest helps visitors and auditors know who they are speaking to. Use a different colour for lab garments and office tops to prevent mix-ups.
Ordering for laboratories
Most laboratories start with healthcare and beauty tunics, scrubs and disposable coveralls. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
