Uniforms need to be hygienic, easy to wash and hard-wearing, but also friendly and professional for owners leaving their pets in your care. Many owners judge a boarding kennel in the first minute at reception, long before they see the runs.
Hoses, disinfectant and daily cleaning
Cleaning runs and pens means water and disinfectant everywhere. Waterproof aprons and wellingtons keep staff dry, and polycotton polos or tunics wash at high temperatures to keep infections like kennel cough from spreading. Avoid cotton hoodies in the kennel block, as they stay wet and hold hair.
Some kennels give each block its own colour of apron or tunic to help control disease, especially for isolation pens.
Scratches, bites and handling
Nervous or excited animals can scratch and nip. Long sleeves and sturdy trousers protect arms and legs during handling, and gloves may be used for difficult cats or medicating. Your risk assessment should cover handling, zoonotic disease and the chemicals you use.
Safety footwear with grip is useful on wet floors, especially where staff carry heavy feed bags or move kennel equipment.
Reception and the owner's first impression
Owners want to feel their pet is going somewhere safe and caring. Reception staff in a clean, branded polo or fleece with a name embroidered on the chest look professional and approachable. Keep a spare top at reception for when a reunion gets muddy.
Cattery staff often wear tunics, which look clean and calm, and suit the quieter atmosphere of a cat unit.
Where to put your logo
Embroidery suits kennels and catteries: it survives hot washes and disinfectant, and a stitched logo looks caring and professional. Put the logo on the left chest of polos, tunics and fleeces, with a staff name on the right chest for reception and handlers, as owners like to know who is looking after their pet. Paw-print and animal logos are popular but can have fine detail, so we may suggest a simpler version for stitching. A larger back logo works on outdoor jackets. You will get a proof to approve, names included.
Ordering for kennels and catteries
Most kennels and catteries start with branded aprons, healthcare tunics and safety wellingtons. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
