Your team is also part of the look of the salon. Clients judge your style by your stylists, so the uniform must feel fashionable, not like a care home tunic.
Why salons wear black
Black and very dark tops hide the odd colour drip and look sharp against bright salon lighting. Bleach is the exception: it shows on black as orange marks. Many salons give colourists a dark apron or gown over the uniform for mixing and applying, and keep the top itself for cutting and styling.
Smooth, tightly woven fabrics shed hair far better than knits or fleece. Cut hair clings to anything fluffy, then scratches the client's neck when the stylist leans in.
Fit for the chair
Stylists lift their arms for hours. Tops need a little length so they do not ride up, and sleeves that stay short or push up easily so they stay dry at the basin. Fitted women's tees and tunics are popular because they look modern and do not swing into the client's face.
Let staff choose between a tee, a tunic or a shirt in the same colour and logo. Consistency comes from the colour and branding, not from everyone wearing the identical cut.
Towels, gowns and the client side
Clients see your towels and gowns up close. Embroidered towels look smart on the shelf and are less likely to go missing. Keep plenty in rotation; colour and peroxide will slowly mark them, so dark shades last longest. Client gowns should be light, water-resistant and easy to wipe. A matching colour and a small logo on the back of each gown makes even the waiting area look considered.
Where to put your logo
A small embroidered logo on the left chest or right sleeve suits most salons and lasts through daily washing. Tone-on-tone, such as grey or white thread on black, looks stylish and less corporate. Avoid large front prints: clients sit facing the mirror and see the stylist's front and arms all appointment. On aprons, a logo across the bib looks great in photos for social media, and names under the logo help new clients.
Ordering for hair salons
Most hair salons start with beauty and salon tunics, branded aprons and women's T-shirts. You can order from one garment and add more as you take people on. The logo price drops at 9 and again at 25 garments, and every garment with a small logo counts towards it, so mixing styles and colours still gets the better price. Before anything is made, we embroider an actual sample of your logo and email you a photo to approve, or you can pop in to our Hull workshop to see it.
